"DES MOINES, Iowa - Acres of mud strewn with dead fish greeted hundreds of eastern Iowa residents Monday after a weekend dam break left their lakefront properties overlooking little more than a small stream."

"LINFEN CITY, China - The death toll in a mudslide that struck a mine warehouse in northern China rose to 128 on Wednesday, even as rescue workers continued looking for victims in the rubble, state media reported.  The landslide happened at about 8 a.m. Monday at Tashan Mine in Linfen city in China's Shanxi province."

Earth Consciousness.  Just as you and I can exhibit positive and negative consciousness regarding our environment, so can our Mother Earth.  Do these disasters represent her striving to purge negativity from her consciousness?  Or are they cryptic messages -- or more blatantly --repetitive calls for us to create positive change?   Is it the height of human arrogance to suggest that we somehow have something to do with these events? Or are they actually a reflection of our (lack of) consciousness?

Human activities inflict harsh and potentially irreversible damage on our environment and our natural resources. The fragile beauty of our land, water and air has never been as threatened as it is today.  Within the past 50 years, we have exponentially increased the output of carbon dioxide, released immense amounts of radio waves, and mutilated our planet to a degree that its species are experiencing the greatest rate of extinction since the age of dinosaurs.

If remained unchecked, many of our current practices put the future of our planet in serious jeopardy.  We may be altering our world at such a rate that it will be unable to sustain life as we now know it.

We are in urgent need of fundamental changes in our lifestyles to avoid a collision course with nature.

It's possible Mother Earth is trying to tell us something with these natural disasters.  It's possible that Mom is trying to warn us in her own language.  How many more events need to occur before the final apocalypse is thrust upon us?  A great change is required if the human race intends to avoid misery and hardship.  Maybe if we change our consciousness and focus on preserving our planet and all its inhabitants by adopting sustainable practices, we can curb the damage and give Mother Earth a chance to heal.

After all, for better or for worst, we are its dominant denizens and our stewardship will dictate the outcome.  The earth's consciousness is mirrored in our consciousness.  The choice is ours , and it resides within our hearts and minds.
